BUCHAREST–Romania’s Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu Wednesday appointed Senator Varujan Voskanian as the representative of his country to the European Commission. Voskanian’s candidacy needs to be approved by the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barosso and the European Parliament. Voskanian will assume office, when Romania joins the European Union on January 1, 2007. Voskanian, 48, chairs the national union of Romanian Armenia’s. He is a mathematician and economist, chairs the Senate Committee on Finance and Budgeting and is outspoken liberal, according to the Associated Press.
