SYDNEY (Reuters)–The Armenian Olympics team won its first medal Friday–when weightlifter Arsen Melikyan won a bronze medal in 77 kilogram weightlifting competition–with a slight difference from gold medalist and record setter Zhan Xugang of China.
Armenia team member Khachatour Kyapanktsian was unable to compete in the same competition due to an earlier injury.
In the women’s 50 meter free-style swimming competition–Armenia’s Yulina Mikhayeva was ranked 63rd out of 74–with the gold medal in that competition going to Inge de Brun of the Netherlands.
In the 800-meter track competition–Armenia’s Anna Nessilian was ranked 34th of 39.
On Thursday–in the men’s 50-meter free-style swimming relay–Armenia’s Demitri Markarian was ranked 58th out of 80. During the final competition–US swimmers Anthony Ervin and Garry Hall.
In Thursday’s women’s skeet competition–Russia’s Yerjanik Avetissian was ranked sixth–while the gold medal went to Azerbaijan’s Zemfira Meftakhetdinova.
Armenia now ran’s 46th overall in medals.
