GLENDALE—“Armenians and Progressive Politics” is well underway to present its second annual conference on the West Coast. The central theme of the conference is the current economic turmoil. It aims to analyze the systemic crisis of capitalism, discuss the socio-economic conditions of the working class people, and explore ways of furthering alternatives and progressive campaigns both locally and internationally.
The conference is scheduled to take place on Friday September 18 at Glendale Public Library and Saturday September 19 at Glendale Community College. Internationally known and award-winning author and lecturer Michael Parenti will appear on Friday night as the keynote speaker.
Well-known scholars and activists from the U.S., Argentina, and Armenia will critically evaluate the free-market economic policies and discuss possible alternatives in four different panels on Saturday. Special guest, Professor Gar Alperovitz of the University of Maryland, will analyze and argue the points he makes in his latest book, “America Beyond Capitalism”, on Saturday.
All community members and students are invited to this unique and enlightening conference to get acquainted with the ideas of these scholars and activists, exchange opinions, and raise questions of their concern.
“Armenians and Progressive Politics” organizes forums that critically examine subjects pertinent to Armenians’ political, social and economic situation within a global context. Such forums explore alternative ways of understanding Armenian issues besides the conventional, state-centered approaches, and examine how Armenian activists can build coalitions with other dispossessed groups and progressive movements. The project is an initiative of the Central Committee of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.
The widely successful, first “Armenians and Progressive Politics—West Coast” conference was held in Glendale last summer with the theme of “Social Justice”, and included topics such as Labor Justice, Feminism and Media Democracy.
