YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian Republican Party Chairman Ashot Navasardyan died Sunday of an apparent heart attack.
Navasardyan–who was also a National Assembly deputy–was 47. The politician died at his residence before emergency personnel were able to save him.
Navasardyan was born in 1950 in Yerevan. His political career began in 1968–when he enlisted in the ran’s of the National Unity Party. He climbed the ran’s of the party through 1973.
Since the early 70s–Navasardyan spent a combined 12 years in prison–and with his release in 1987–he became involved in the independence movement.
He participated in the liberation movement in Karabakh–specifically in Yerashkhavan–Martakert–Shoushi and Kelbajar.
He–along with several colleagues created the Republican Party in 1990.
Navasardyan has served on several state structures including the republic’s constitutional referendum council–as well as the National Assembly’s defense–national security and interior committee.
It is worth noting that Navasardyan had been in a dispute with the Republic bloc of the National Assembly–since the latter wanted to be the only entity utilizing the Republic name–an issue vocally opposed by Navasardyan.
