Photojournalist Armineh Johannes took part in the 5th World Masters of Photography Award 2025, which concluded on March 31 at the Galerie LIK in Vienna, Austria. Her photography series on Artsakh, called “The Faces of War,” won first place at the event.
The WMPO international jury, who view photographs by individuals from all across the globe, of all ages, named Johannes the winner of the competition. Awardees received the coveted WMPO Awards, participation as a special guest at the award ceremony, and inclusion in the “World Masters of Photography” photo book.
Johannes is a seasoned documentary/humanitarian photojournalist whose work is deeply rooted in storytelling and emotional connection. Born in Tehran to Armenian parents, she began her photography journey in 1986, capturing the daily life of indigenous Berbers in the rugged beauty of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.
Johannes’ photography has been widely featured in esteemed publications such as Le Monde, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, as well as numerous photography magazines around the world.

The photojournalist has earned accolades from the Magnum Photography Awards, VIEPA, Vinenna International Photo Award, Monochrome Awards and the Neutral Density Photography Awards.
Johannes’ photo essays, including her work on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, have earned her international acclaim, as she has exhibited her work in countries like France, Portugal, and the United States, sharing her vision with audiences around the world.
The event was hosted by LIK Association for the Promotion of Worldwide Photography, Art and Education.
