ENCINO–Organized by the Anahid chapter of the Armenian Relief Society (ARS) to benefit the Javakhk Fund–a fundraising dinner took place at the Ferrahian School’s Dikranian Hall on January. More than one hundred ARS members and supporters in attended.
The dinner was generously sponsored by Armine Boghossian Thompson–in memory of her late son George Thompson’s 50th birthday.
After chapter chairwoman Armenouhi Tomassian’s welcoming–ARS Central Executive member Anahid Meymarian presented a brief biography of George Thompson. Born in 1953–George Thompson was of the founders of the ‘Armens’ sports club at Ferrahian Armenian School. Unfortunately–Thompson lost a struggle to cancer at the age of 43–in 1996.
ARS Javakhk Fund chairwoman Haigoush Keghinian-Kohler of the ARS Regional Executive–stressed the most urgent needs of present-day Javakhk: reconstruction of twenty schools–repair of roads–securing residential electricity and heat–as well as creating basic working conditions.
ARS Regional Executive Chairwoman Sonia Peltekian also presented additional details on the current socio-economic situation in Javakhk.
Attendees gladly responded to the challenges presented by the ARS in lending a helping hand to Javakhk–and raised more than $4,000 to be used for the reconstruction of one of Javakhk’s schools.
