The Armenian Relief Society "Sipan" Chapter and the Armenian Society of Los Angeles joined forces to organize a special art exhibition on April 5–showcasing traditional hand work and other crafts of Armenian women. The exhibit and sale took place at the Glendale Armenian Center.
The walls of the Center were covered with paintings–needle work–art work–crafts and other displays–and tables placed all around the room also displayed various pieces of art all originally done by hand by Armenian women–children–wives and grandmothers over the years.
The capacity audience in attendance was also treated to sculpting work–gold–silver and bronze carvings including the Armenian alphabet–khatch kar creations and various blankets and other cloth-work.
A 15-member joint ARS and Armenian Society committee–present at the exhibit–was established to organize the event.
The event kicked off at 12 noon with a welcome from committee vice-chairperson Tereza Hagopian–who congratulated newly-elected Armenian President Robert Kocharian first and foremost–and then spoke about the value the Armenian women has to the Armenian nation artistically and otherwise.
Hagopian went on to say Armenian women over the course of Armenian history had been strong-willed and supportive–both in time of peace and during the Genocide.
Garen Gharibian performed the national anthems of both Armenia and the United States–following Hagopian’s speech on the stage–which was decorated with rugs from Karabakh.
Committee chairperson Sona Kizirian then spoke of the talents of Armenian women–and said it was their work and effort that helped keep Armenia’s close and tight-knit. Kizirian said it was the fruits of Armenian womens’ efforts that were on display at the event–and she hoped Armenia and its citizens would go forward hand-in-hand–together–as one.
Hagopian returned to thank the members of the organizing committee for putting on the event–as well as singled out Anahid Stepanian–who was in attendance representing the Armenian Consulate in Los Angeles–and members of the Armenian media which included Asbarez and the Armenian Observer.
ARS "Sipan" Chapter president Dzaghoush Gourjian also spoke at the conclusion of the event–thanking all in attendance for a job well done.
