STEPANAKERT (ArmRadio)–The Artsakh State University marked its 40th anniversary on Friday with celebrations at the campus. Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Bako Sahakian spoke on the occasion, praising the institute as a national pillar that has been instrumental in the preservation of Armenian identity in the mountainous republic.
Describing the day as a “holiday for our entire nation,” Sahakian recalled the University’s history and pivotal role in the Karabakh liberation struggle. “During all these years the university has been one of the most important centers of preserving national identity. It stood at the origins of the liberation struggle,” Sahakian said.
Artsakh State University was granted the status of an official university in 1992, following Karabakh’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. “This was not only of scientific and educational, but also of political importance for our young independent republic,” Sahakian said.
The university serves as one of Karabakh’s “key educational establishments,” Sahakian said, adding that the college is at the forefront of educating and preparing younger generations, laying the groundwork for a healthy civil society and democracy.
But the university also faces new and difficult challenges, Sahakian noted, underscoring that those challenges “require persistent, purposeful and regular work on a daily basis.”
“Our goal is to have a modern and competitive educational center meeting international standards,” Sahakian said, adding that such an ambitious agenda will require a deepening of ties with Universities in Armenia and other countries. “The administration of the university with the support of the state should do everything possible to achieve that.”
