YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At a "Trial of 31" court session Tuesday–attorney Anahit Yesayan filed a request to find her client Vahan Hovhanessian not guilty on the charges of high treason–plotting of terrorist acts–attempted overthrow of the government.
According to the attorney the case against her client had been built and "investigation resorted to everything – distortion–falsification–exaggeration" to make those concocted charges stick.
To prove herself–she reminded of distortions in the protocol of a confrontation between Hovhanessian and Gagik Karapetian attended by her.
According to Yesayan–another link in the chain of distortions is the assertion of the investigation agencies to the effect that Vahan Hovhannessian and Manvel Yeghiazarian met in summer 1995–while the meeting took place in fall 1994. Yesayan drew the court’s attention to the fact that in the tense conditions of summer 1995–it was favorable for the government to neutralize Hovhanessian and some other participants of the Karabakh liberation struggle–who showed political activity and tried to establish an organization dealing with social problems of freedom fighters.
Attorney Tigran Janoyan requested from the court to find his client Armen Roustamian not guilty of illegal possession of arms and calls for a forcible overthrow of power. According to the attorney–there is no evidence to prove that his client is guilty.
Janoyan said that if only the defendants are acquitted– one can speak of any justice in Armenia. The attorney also noted that after the trial is over–the attorneys are going to give material of the case for scrutiny to international human rights organizations.
