BAKU (Armenpress)–Wrapping up his official visit to Turkey and encouraged by the latter’s pledges to provide more military-technical assistance–Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev has resumed his calls to conduct "an anti-terrorist operation" in Karabakh to liberate the occupied territories.
According to Abiyev–the current situation gives Azerbaijan an opportunity to conduct an anti-terrorist operation on its own–like Russia that is trying to do the same in Chechnya. "It is not worth expecting special support either from international organizations or great powers. Nobody will hamper us," he is quoted by a Baku-based Zerkalo daily.
"If we conduct an anti-terrorist operation in Karabakh–additional international sanctions will not threaten Azerbaijan–despite the fact that both Baku and Yerevan have committed themselves to resolving this problem peacefully when they joined the Council of Europe," he says–adding that Azerbaijan has to act quickly.
"It is only now that nobody will pay attention to our anti-terrorist operation because the US is focusing on how to punish the Taliban while Russia is doing the same with Chechens. But as soon as Washington and Moscow solve their problems–the peacekeepers of the OSCE Minsk Group will try to prevent us if we act," he says.
