BAKU (ANS)–The Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Vilayat Guliyev–said the idea of stationing Turkish or NATO military bases on the territory of Azerbaijan is "constructive."If a state occupying another state’s lands has foreign military bases on its territory–then Azerbaijan–too–should take similar measures," the foreign minister added.
In his talk with reporters–Guliyev said Baku must "activate the efforts in this direction." Commenting on the upcoming Key West meeting of the Azeri and Armenian presidents–the head of Azerbaijan’s foreign diplomacy excluded the possibility of any agreement over the Karabakh conflict. He also excluded the possibility of signing any declaration. According to Guliyev–an exchange of opinions on general principles will be held in Florida.
Regarding the same issue–the son of Azerbaijani President–Ilham Aliyev–who is also the First Vice President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR)–is against foreign military presence in Azerbaijan. "Russia wants to activate its presence in the region and this makes us happy–since this country had been staying on the sidelines over the past years," Aliyev.
According to Aliyev–the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs must show the same level of activity. As for stationing foreign bases in Azerbaijan–the SOCAR official said the following: "I’m categorically against any foreign military presence in Azerbaijan." When asked for the reason of his criticism of the West–Aliyev said–"The fact is that the OSCE Minsk Group didn’t comply with its commitmen’s. The conflict has yet to be resolved and the Azeri lands remain under Armenian occupation. Our indignation is caused by the co-chairs’ lack of activity."
Speaking of his expectations from the Aliyev-Kocharian meeting in Key West–Florida–the SOCAR vice president said any meeting has a result. "It’s not mandatory for everything to end in signing agreemen’s. Talks and exchange of opinions is a result as well."
