BAKU–During a rally last week organized by Azerbaijan’s Democratic Congress–a coalition of several influential parties in Azerbaijan–the resignation of the current leadership in Armenia was demanded and a call was made to begin criminal proceedings against Armenia’s Acting President and Prime Minister Robert Kocharian for alleged war crimes.
The demonstration also protested Azeri President Gaidar Aliyev’s human rights policies and said that human rights would be a voided concept until Aliyev is president.
This demonstration coincided with a visit by US State Department human rights officials to Azerbaijan. The US officials also met with representatives of Azeri human rights organizations.
Azeri presidential elections are scheduled for later this year.
