IJEVAN, Armenia (Armenpress)–Forest fires broke out across the Armenian-Azeri border in Tavoush province on February 15 after strong winds carried flames from a deliberately ignited field across the border, fire officials said Monday.
According to fire official Artak Mejinian the fire was started by Azeri soldiers. The flames were quickly whipped up by strong winds, spreading across the border to engulf forests near the village of Aygehovit.
Locally stationed Armenian armed forces were able to extinguish the flames, he was quoted by Armenpress as saying.
Mejinian said the fire was put out with great difficulty but only after it spread back across the Azeri border with the changing direction of the winds.
