ANKARA (Combined Sources)—Reports that Turkish intelligence forces allegedly thwarted an attack on Nagorno-Karabakh ordered by Azeri president Ilham Aliyev prior to the signing of the Armenia-Turkey protocols were refuted Wednesday by the Azeri ambassador to Turkey.
“They are writing whatever they see in their dreams at night,” said Zakir Hasimov, Azerbaijan’s ambassador in Ankara.
On Tuesday, the Azeri Yeni Musavat newspaper, in a front-page item, reported that the Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) allegedly thwarted an attack on Nagorno-Karabakh ordered by Aliyev, in an effort to not hinder Ankara’s move to normalize relations with Armenia.
The Hurriyet daily newspaper reported on Tuesday that the MIT had also not released any statement concerning the allegations and the agency could neither confirm nor deny the veracity of the Yeni Musavat piece.
“By averting the Azerbaijani operation, Turkey prevented the normalization process with Armenia from being undermined and its own dignity from being harmed. The essence and the secret of the relationship taking shape between Turkey and Azerbaijan depends on this matter,” the Azeri newspaper wrote.
“Had Azerbaijan begun a military operation during that period, the Armenian initiative of the [ruling Justice and Development Party] AKP would have entirely collapsed,” Yeni Musavat added. According to the paper, the alleged military operation took place about one year before Turkey and Armenia signed deals in October 2009 in Zurich, Switzerland, to establish diplomatic relations.
The Azeri newspaper also claimed that options for military operations were reviewed. “The reception of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic’s Parliament Speaker Vasif Talibov at the highest level in Turkey could be a part of Ankara’s plan to stop Azerbaijan,” it said.
Stressing that allegations in the newspaper do not reflect the truth, Hasimov said that everybody in Azerbaijan was mocking the report.
“Such a thing is not possible. This report is nothing but exaggeration. Diplomatic sources have also refuted the report,” added Hasimov.
Turkish diplomacy throughout their history has been one of lies, threats, deceit, invasions, not to mention genocide, this is what we are up against.
At least the Turks can keep the Azeris in line, they should have as much luck with the Kurds.
