LVIV–UKRAINE (Religious Information Service of Ukraine)–The Armenian community in western Ukrainian Lviv has invited Charles Aznavour to Lviv to give a benefit concert for the reconstruction of the city’s fourteenth-century Armenian Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. According to Myroslav Otkovych–director of the National Museum in Lviv–Aznavour’s concert will be sometime in 2003.
The depository of the National Museum of Ukraine–with a unique collection of 10 thousand items of Ukrainian art–has occupied the church building since the end of World War Two. The chapel of the cathedral building was returned to local Armenian community of Ukraine in the 1990s and services are now held there. The return of Armenian Cathedral–in its entirety–to the is planned sometime in mid 2003.
According to Vasyl Bilous–head of the Department on Religious Matters–about 5 thousand art items have been transferred to new depository buildings over the last few years. Another depository is currently under reconstruction–in order to hand over the cathedral.
