BAKU (Noyan Tapan)–President Haydar Aliyev’s foreign policy chief of staff Novruz Mamedov welcomed a recent announcement by former Armenian leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan that he will reenter the political arena in time for the 2003 presidential elections.
"The approach of Armenia’s former leader toward regional matters were more realistic," said Mamedov–who added that Ter-Petrosyan’s posturing could have had a positive influence on the Karabakh peace process.
Mamedov said the current leadership in Yerevan is not realistic–and opined that if the current trend continues–Armenia’s foreign policy is doomed to collapse.
"Announcemen’s by official Yerevan that Nagorno-Karabakh should become an independent republic leave no doubt that Armenia does not have an outlook on constructive talks. Thus–Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s return to power would be desirable," said Mamedov.
