YEREVAN (Arka)—Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest chain of ice cream shops, has opened its first store in Armenia at Yerevan Mall, the company said in a press release.
The company is known for its “31 flavors” slogan, with the idea that a customer could have a different flavor every day of any month. Today it owns and runs 7000 ice cream shops in 52 countries around the world, including 327 in Russia and other former Soviet republics.
“The opening of the first shop in Armenia is an important event. We have Baskin Robbins shops successfully working in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Latvia. Last year we opened a shop in Moldova and plan to open more in Belarus and Estonia, Agnessa Osipova, a Baskin Robbins representative, said today.
Customers at the company’s shop in Yerevan are offered the products of its Moscow factory that produces more than 150 varieties of premium ice cream, desserts, smoothies, sorbets, sherbets, sugar-free ice cream, and exclusive handmade ice-cream cakes.
The first joint venture of the company in Russia – Baskin Robbins Soviet International – was registered in 1990. In 1996 it opened its factory in Moscow, the largest ice cream factory in Europe.
I don’t want to seem too negative, but globalization and uniform, prepackaged culture replacing local flavors should be of concern to us. I love Armenian ice cream and Armenian confectioneries, I think its far superior to Baskin-Robbins, not to mention less processed and filled with less chemicals and preservatives. I’d hate to see Yerevan turn into another victim of coca-colanization, overflowing with McDondalds, KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut… But I’m sure the Moscow factory churns out high-quality food, so let’s see.
It’s from Moscow, so naturally it’s better.
