Longtime Armenian activist and benefactor–Sarkis Boghosian–passed away Feb. 28 in Fresno at the age of 93.
Boghosian had been honored by Aram I–Catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia not too long ago with the Knight of Cilicia medal for his years of devoted service and support.
Born in the Husseinik village of Kharpert in 1905–Boghossian was orphaned following the 1915 genocide and taken in by a Turkish family–avoiding persecution and ultimately finding his way to the American Malat orphanage.
Boghossian is returned to another orphanage in Kharpert–and–in 1923–among other orphans–is transported to Greece with the intent on ultimately making it back to Armenia. Unfortunately–Boghossian has only the means to make it as far as France.
Trained as a silversmith–the 22-year old Boghossian marries Siranoush in 1927–and after having one son and one daughter–joins the ran’s of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation to better serve his people and his cause.
Boghossian would always hold dear to him his meetings with Avetis Aharonian and Shavarsh Mkhakanian–whom Boghossian said he looked up to tremendously.
World War II hits shortly thereafter–leaving its permanent mark on Boghossian–as just six months later–his only daughter–Siranoush–passes away. Four years later–in 1951–his onl//y son–Tigran–passes away as well.
Boghossian–for the second time in his life–is again orphaned–and begins his life anew–coming to Fresno in 1955 to join his sister. Boghossian remarries–this time to Vera–and joins the ARF "Soghomon Tehlirian" gomideh where he continues his service to the Armenian people.
In 1980–Boghossian loses Vera–and lives the remainder of his life alone. In the latter part of his life–Boghossian was cared for by Tirouhi Kupelian. Boghossian spent his final days spreading his vast wealth among his people–donating to charities and organization he felt close to. Boghossian’s funeral will take place Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Fresno.
