LOS ANGELES—Legendary Armenian singer Paul Baghdadlian passed away early Tuesday morning at Glendale Adventist Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1953, Paul Baghdadlian is considered one of the most popular Armenian singers throughout the world.
Baghdadlian began his career in 1974 in Beirut, and in 1977 moved to Los Angeles. He has written and produced hundreds of hit songs, mainly love ballads that have captivated Armenians across the globe.
Baghdadlian’s Facebook page was inundated with condolences. “You will always be around in our homes and our hearts… you’re irreplaceable!” wrote one fan. “Paul, I grew up listening to your beautiful ballads, new and exciting pop songs and always looked forward to seeing you live…You were a beautiful person and will be missed,” wrote another.
In an interview in Beirut last year, Baghdadlian said that one of his happiest moments was hearing that two Armenians had gotten married after meeting at one of his concerts.
“It is with a clear conscience that I tell you now that I love and worship Armenia, my fatherland, even more than someone who was born and lived there,” he said on another occasion.

Mr Gary with all my respect to you sir, Paul’s singing style or music was not all “Rabiz” Paul was from Middle east, the Rabiz style was not so Popular or even recognize in middle east 70s or even 80s in Armenian communities , Paul has hid own unique style of singing, i can say it is mix of Turkish and Arabic with the Armenian touch of course, the beauty is that he knew how to Mix all this and Make his own way of singing, he has nothing to do with Rabiz, very simple, withing hundreds of singers you can easily find his voice different from the rest, simply he was one of the Kind, may God bless his soul.

Paul was a legend. Perhaps to Western Armenian majority but he was a Legend. Some of the comments here are disgusting. One person mentioned how Paul introduced turkish culture etc. People like that makes me want to puke. He was not only a cousin but more than brother due to his adorable degnified nature, that we still in state of dnial for entirely a fit person who was dedicated to his responsibilities of work, we will miss you tremendously brother Torkom jan, it is not the same when we come to Armenia next time we miss you badly, Asdvats hokid lusavore but we will always remember you. I’ve listened to his beautiful music for over 30 years, I had his music recorded on a casset before my brother and I moved to USA a long time ago, listened to it and sang his songs for a long time away from family and friends in this country, I saw him in concerts and I will miss him greatly, may he Rest In Peace, his music touched our hearts and forever will touch our hearts and mind. As for him being a “legend”, this is a point of view that is also very sad and troubling. How we measure the requirements to be a legend tells much about us than Paul’s career. And what it is saying is quite troublesome, taking into consideration the very poor quality of this “legend”‘s musical standards. Having been present to his performances…ordinary commercial pop performer, at best. And this is the barometer that we can pretty much measure the standards of the overwhelming new “legends” that pop up every now and then in our communities. If they make us dance…they are legendary.

So Paul sings “Rabiz” and it is crystal clear that this is a word that is used to denote people viewed as “yerort mas” of the West Armenian diaspora by the high and mighty nomenklatura of Former Hamaynavar Soviet Armenia which favored Khatchadourian and other “proper” musicians and “legends.” The word itself is a form of Turkish popular music, and is a derogatory term when used by Armenians about other Armenians. There is a constant hostility to folk forms, constant hostility to shared heritage with the Turks, constant hostility to anything enjoyed by West Armenians and even this occasion is not exempt from this venom! Enough, you do not need to attack the man’s form of art on the occasion of his death — go listen to some Russian composer instead and leave us alone with Paul, Addis, Harout, and Kif Time. The only good thing about migration from Armenian has been the decimation of the nomenklatura — a chimera of authenticity and self-hatred.

It is a well known fact that Diaspora Armenian pop music is not as high a level of musical/lyrical, i.e. artistic form. here is the equivalent in “soviet” music. But, in Armenia due to organized musical education from an early age it is normal and true that more people of higher standards are produced.
So please don’t make this an artificial us/them issue when there isn’t any.
Back to Paul Baghdadlian being a “legend”. I strongly disagree because…he simply is not up to universal standards of what it means to be a legend. He was a good mainstream commercial pop singer, and a lot of people loved him, that’s fine. A lot of People loved Boy George when he was at the top of his career, so what?. But if you want to call him a legendary as well, then go ahead. There is no need to feel “offended”, non is intended.

I am so hurt for our loss. Paul Baghdadlian will remain in my heart now and forever. He was truly a deep, soulful person and the way he sang his love songs were like no other; Heartfelt and genuine. I attended a few of his concert/events here in Toronto, Canada and can say I was touched in every way and audience can be moved by a special artist/singer live on stage. paul was paul you like him or you dont simple as that, personally I don’t care for his voice but some do,other then that all i can say about the singer he did not have big voice or sang on notes, but again most of popular singer today do the same. he is not hovhanes badalian or ruben matiosyan or old time greats but he was liked by some and disliked by others, we should always remember that the corrector of any singer dose contribute to his popularity, every other issue is irrelevant .

People’s taste in music is purely subjective. We enjoy listening to a particular style of music either because they sound nice or we identify with the song lyrics based on our life experiences, or both. Personally, I primarily listen to Traditional and Instrumental Armenian style of music because they sound purely Armenian to me. I also enjoyed Paul’s earlier work.
So, let’s leave a singer’s style of singing and quality to the experts because only they can be objective. Let’s not turn this into a lame political issue and rip each other apart. Instead, let’s celebrate Paul’s music and the role it played in the lives of Armenians around the world, the Diaspora Armenians in particular.
I love Armenian music from any region. I have heard of “rabiz” singers. What is ironic is that some ignorant people from Armenia label Western Armenian singers and people in general as Middle Eastern, but when I hear “rabiz” music, most of it sounds like some Arab dude in prayer. That’s the best I can describe it.

However, I must say I’m disappointed, but not at all surprised by some of the postings on this site. Didn’t anybody’s mother ever teach them “if you have nothing nice to say, then say nothing”? Why pay your respects to someone by disrespecting them? Even in death can’t we Armenians find a way of putting differences aside? I guess since most of us can’t live in peace how can it be expected to let the the deceased rest in peace? AMOT TSEZI !!!!!!!!!
I would like to begin by expressing my condolences to Paul Jr and the Baghdadlian family for thier loss. To the general armenian public; We have all experienced a tremendous loss with Paul’s passing. He was one of, if not the most important of Armenian figures of our time and his music brought love, peace, and harmony to those who listened.His musc also inspired many of the musicians that practice today. His legacy shall live on long after our time as well. In retrospect, Paul’s style was unique to all styles of Armenian music/singers. He created lyrics and sang them as if he lived them. Thus, he differentiated himself as a singer and artist. What was most impressive about Paul and his life was that, he was able to make everyone who disliked him becasue of his personality, life style, stories/rumors etc…, love him while he was up on stage. There are only a few legendary people in the entire world that have been hated and loved by the same people at the same time for different reasons. Paul was unique in that way from other Armenian singers. His songs touched and inspired so many people that, the bad life choices he made sometimes were overshadowed and people loved him anyway. He can be compared to Michael Jackson, a person charged with child molestation but yet so loved by so many people around the globe. The Irony of it alone differentiated him and justifies his legacy. In essence, Paul provided the Armenian community and people around entertainment enriched with love, harmony, and culture. He will be greatly missed. His legacy will go on. His music will continue to be heard and sung so long as Armenians around the world continue to hit the play button. Thanks Paul. RIP.
Méssage pour tout les armeniens du monde.
Chèr compatriote, depuis le décès de paul Baghdadlian en date du 28/06/2011, je regarde et je cortique sans cesse les méssages que je remarque sur le net, mais la plus part des critiques, et surtout de la part des armeniens d’arménie.
J’ai honte d’être un armenien! arreter vous sa sufit un peut d’éxemple des juifs ne feras pas mal je vous assure.
à l’age de 21 ans j’ai quité mon pays natal le liban suite des évenements en date du Avril 1974, et je me suis instaler en france à marseille en 1976, et j’ai rencontré des armeniens et pas mal, mais malhereusement la plus part ne parler pas leurs langue maternel ils étaient déja françiser, d’autre avaient honte parcequ’il penser que leur langue n’été pas assez riche, et pourtant avec un alphabet de 39 lettre, à ma connaisance je ne vois pas au monde plus riche que le notre, et d’autre armenien qui sont nés en france malhereusement connaisent pas à part le français.
Je vais vous dire une bonne chose!!! Prèsque un an après mon arrivé en france quand j’ai vu tous tout ce que je vous ai écris j’ai décider de faire quelque chose pour ma race mais quelque chose de très bien, et j’ai choisie de créer une émission armenien dans une station de radio arabe, et pour la 1er fois dans toute la france grace à nos amis arabes, dailleur je les salut au passage, on entendais la langue armenien sur les ondes d’un radio, au bout de 6 mois je me débrouille d’obtenire 3 heures démission, et à la fin 12 heures d’émission par semeine.
Ils étaient où nos autre armeniens qui vivaient en france? et grace à mois si j’ose de dire 70% des armeniens ont commencer à parler en armenien et sans oublier les jeunes qui sont nos future.
Alors SVP cesser de parler nimporte quoi et surtout réflechisser 2 fois avant de prendre la parole et envoyer des méssages dans des diferents site sur le net à propos de paul baghdadlian, rabis ou pas rabis, si vous êtes capable et faire le quart de ce qui’l à fait à travers de la planette et doner des concerts entre 50 et 60 fois dans l’anné et dormir pratiquement dans les avions durant des voyages infinis, et faire revivre tous les armeniens avec ces chansons d’amour et patriotique.
Mettez fin SVP a ces maladies incurable dans notre race on est tous des armeniens, et n’oublier pas que l’union fait la force.
Vive les armeniens! et que le tricolors flote toujours de partout dans le monde.
