YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The deadline for registration of deputy candidates has been set for April 23. As reported by Khachatour Bezirjyan–chairman of the Central Electoral Committee–regional committees are currently verifying the signature lists. Those on nomination of Vahan Hovanessian’s candidacy are also in the stage of verification.
"The nomination of Vahan Hovanessian’s candidacy is mainly aimed at getting him out of prison and bringing him back to the political arena–and not the increasing of opposition votes in the parliament," Hovanessian’s public defender Bagrat Yesayan said.
According to him–Hovanessian’s registration as deputy candidate is a "chance for the authorities to honorably come out of a situation formed in the Republic’s internal life due to an absurd and destabilizing process–and turn their relations with opposition into a normal political plane".
Yesayan reported that public defenderswere planning to nominate "Arapo" battalion commander Manvel Yeghiazarian–another defendant in the "Trial of 31," as well. However–he cannot be registered as deputy candidate–because he has propiska in Karabakh and was not registered as deputy candidate during parliamentary polls in 1995.
