YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem–who was the initiator of the meeting of Armenian and Azeri foreign ministers on May 15 in Reykjavik–after returning to Ankara made a statement concerning the establishment of diplomatic relations with Armenia.
According to the Turkish Marmara newspaper Cem announced four main expectations Turkey has in order to establish diplomatic relations with Armenia. The minister said that first–Armenia must renounce its habit that creates hostility using history–leaving the issue on Armenian Genocide for historians. Second–he said Armenia must eliminate the points concerning the territorial deman’s from its Constitution. Third–the Karabakh conflict must be settled–which–according to Turkey–means that Armenia must withdraw its army from the Karabakh territory. And fourth–Armenia must provide a corridor for communication between Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan.
Cem also stated that Turkey is a candidate for membership to the European Union and Armenia will sooner or later also reach that point. From this point–establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey is of a great importance.
