YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–China is in preparation for large-scale celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the Chinese People’s Republic on October 1. Beijing will see a grand reception and a military parade–Chinese Ambassador to Armenia Zhu Zhaoshun said at a press conference on September 24.
The National Television of Armenia will prepare a special program on that occasion–the week of Chinese television–the ambassador added.
Zhaoshun briefly told those present about the milestones in the past 50-year history of China–prospects of the country’s development and China’s relations with the rest of the world.
The ambassador laid special emphasis on the fact that China has been able to solve the food problems of its 1.25-billion-strong people. By its current total economic strength China ran’s seventh in the world today.
It is the largest producer of such industrial goods as steel–coal–cement–fertilizers–and TV-sets. It is the world’s number one harvester of grains–cotton–oil-bearing crops–fruit and meat products.
It is the world’s second largest producer of cotton cloth and chemical fiber–fourth largest producer of sugar–and fifth largest extractor of oil. China’s present currency reserve totals to 145 billion dollars.
The country has twice doubled its gross domestic product over the past 20 years.
Zhaoshun attributed China’s significant progress to the "path of building socialism with Chinese niceties" paved by Deng Xaoping.
China has been successful in settling border problems with neighboring countries–in particular–with Russia–with which China has the longest land border in the world.
The ambassador attached special importance to meetings of Shanghai Five–which–according to him–have become the model of interstate relations in the Asian-Pacific region.
He also stressed that China strongly opposes hegemony and position-of-strength policy–interference in other countries’ home affairs and deems that "the presence of one super power only is fraught with great danger for the entire world."
The ambassador declared that in the next century the Chinese people is going to accomplish the final unification of the Motherland and to resolve the problem of Taiwan.
He thanked the Government of Armenia for its position on the problem of Taiwan: "We are in one trench and on one front on the international arena."
In general–according to the ambassador–"political relations between Armenia and China are in an ideal state" and there are practically no differences between the two countries.
Speaking of prospects of possible strategic partnership between China and Armenia–Zhaoshun said that issues of this kind exist mainly in relations between great powers as a small state can’t solve strategic problems.
"If we take into account the fact that China and Russia are two great powers that have established strategic relationships and as a strategic partner of Armenia Russia represents Armenia’s interests too–then we may consider that there are strategic relations between China and Armenia too," Zhaoshun said.
The ambassador emphasized that China is pursuing a highly balanced policy in relation to all countries of the Caucasus–earnestly seeking steady improvemen’s and broader cooperation in the region.
According to Zhaoshun–China supports a fair solution to the Karabakh problem acceptable to all parties to the conflict. China supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and views the direct dialogue and contact between the top officials of the conflicting sides as the key to the problem solution.
