YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Commander of the North Cascasus military district Colonel-General Victor Kazantsev arrived in Yerevan Monday to conduct an inspection of the military units of the Armenia’stationed group of Russian troops in the Caucasus.
"The goal of my visit is to inspect the command of the Russian military base and to monitor the aviation group and the anti-aircraft unit," the general said.
The "Kavkaz-Press" agency reported that during his visit to Armenia in February Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force Colonel-General Anatoly Kornukov pointed out that efforts were underway to form a united CIS anti-aircraft defense system. Pilots and other aviation officials of the anti-aircraft defense at the Russian military base went on alert. Last December new MIG-29 airplanes were transported to Armenia to replace the outdated MIG-23 airplanes.
