YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The "Miss Armenia – 2000" beauty contest will be held at the Spendiarov National Opera and Ballet House on June 9–the Contest Steering Committee Chairman–Artistic Director of the Yerevan Chamber Theater Ara Yernjakian announced at a press conference–June 5.
Twenty-two girls aged 17-24 will participate in the fourth "Miss Armenia" beauty contest.
They will be representing Armenia’s capital Yerevan along with three other regions–Armavir–Lori and Siunik–as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Those girls who were to participate in last November’s "Miss Armenia – 1999" contest that failed in the aftermath of the tragic events of October 27–will also take part in this contest. Guests from Russia–Belarus and Slovakia have been invited to attend the event. The general sponsor of the event is the "Mika Limited" Insurance Company. An exhibition of portraits of the 22 girls participating in the final part of the contest will open at the National Opera and Ballet House the same day.
The Chairman of the Contest Steering Committee says $6,900 have been spent so far to organize the contest.
According to Yernjakian–such contests bring attention to distinguish Armenia on the world scale as it was in 1998 when Gohar Haroutiunian–a dazzling beauty from Armenia won the title of Miss CIS–and later in 1999 participated in the "Miss Europe – 1999" contest eventually ranking sixth among the 48 national contestants.
Yernjakian also announced that a beauty contest for women aged 20-100 is expected to be held in Yerevan this October. The winner of this contest will later participate in various international events.
