YEREVAN (Combined Sources)—Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan retained his IBO title with a 119:107, 120:107, 120:107 score in an impressive fight against Evans Mbamba of South Africa that took place in Yerevan’s Karen Demirchian Sports Complex on September 3.
Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian and head of the National Olympic Committee Gagik Tsarukyan were among those who attended the match.
Darchinyan dedicated his victory to the 20th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh. He gifted his IBO belt to President Sarkisian and the award for his best knockout in 2008 to Tsarukyan.
After the match, he thanked his fans for their unwavering support and voiced hope to have more matches in Armenia. “It was a powerful fight. I wanted to knock him out but hurried and failed to reach the best result,” the boxer said.
Three matches were held during the “Armenia vs. World” evening: Ovannes Zhamkochyanvs. Mikhail Gogashvili (Georgia, 60 kg), Azat Ovanissyan vs. SergeyKasimov (Estonia, 55.5 kg) and Gabriel Tolmadzhyan vs. Yevgeny Fedorov(Latvia, 59 kg).
“This was a historic victory for me because I was competing in Armenia for the first time as a professional. Everyone saw that, even though it’s very difficult to organize such events in our country, everything went smoothly and well,” Darchinyan told the Hayots Ashkharh newspaper.
