ANKARA—Turkey’s ruling party has picked Ahmet Davutoglu, the foreign minister, to replace president-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan as its new chairman and prime minister, Al Jazeera reports.
Erdogan, the outgoing prime minister, announced Davutoglu’s nomination on Thursday following a meeting of the senior leaders of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party).
“I believe our candidate for party leadership and prime minister will realize the ideal of a new Turkey and the AKP’s targets for 2023,” when modern Turkey celebrates its 100th anniversary, Erdogan told supporters of his party, the AFP news agency reported.
Davutoglu, 55, was long reported to be Erdogan’s top choice to replace him. Davutoglu has steered Turkey’s foreign policy since 2009 and was an adviser to Erdogan before that. He is expected by many analysts to be a docile prime minister, primarily taking instructions from Erdogan.
Erdogan has indicated he intends to keep his grip on government by making use of the largely ceremonial presidency’s seldom-used powers such as calling and presiding over cabinet meetings, and by expanding the office with new powers, the AP news agency reported.
Davutoglu’s nomination will be rubber-stamped by an extraordinary congress of the AK Party on August 27 and he will take office a day later.
Erdogan was elected president on August 10 with 52 percent of the vote.
Newly elected Erdoghan pasha And Davutoglu pasha. A new era of Ottoman empire. God help the minorities in Turkey.
Not so quick! It all depends what Gul decides to do on 8/27/14. Even AK party congress has been calendared to August 27 to preempt Gul’s possible influence and even candidacy to lead the party, since his term as President does not expire until 8/28/2014. But one never knows what can happen in this crazy stage of Turkish politics. After all, according to the Turkish constitution President elect, once it becomes official and announced, he/she must resign from the parliament if he/she is a parliamentarian. Erdogan is (you need to be elected to the TBMM to become a PM), therefore at the moment according to the Turkish constitution Erdogan neither should be occupying a seat in the parliament nor should occupy the PM chair. But he does since all is possible in Turkey……………so at the end of the day Gul is the wild card to decide who will be crowned as PM! Since if he chooses to get involved, and attend the party Congress he can be elected next party chair easily, therefore he becomes de facto next PM since AKP has absolute majority in TBMM. If that takes place, then part II of the party starts. After all, Gul will not be letting the PM chair to become a side kick to the Presidency therefore will not let constitutional change to take place where all powers are transferred from PM to the President.
Good point
Turkish politics are of no importance and irrelevant . They are all turks, which means bad news for Armenia, regardless of parties and politicians.
