ANKARA (Hurriyet)—Turkey warned Thursday that passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution by a key U.S. congressional committee early next month would hinder normalization efforts with Armenia.
The resolution (H.Res. 252) calls on the President of the United States to properly acknowledge the historical record on the Armenian Genocide. It is slated for a vote in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee on March 4.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the issue was taken up in detail during Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu’s meetings in Washington this week. Sinirlioglu was in the Swiss capital of Bern last week meeting with officials on the issue, as well. The Turkish official had been tasked with securing support from the two Western capitals for Turkey’s efforts to force Armenia to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and agree to a historical commission to examine the Genocide.
“We are exerting efforts for a comprehensive peace in the Caucasus,” said Davutoglu. He warned, however, that attempts to recognize the Armenian Genocide in Congress would harm this objective and called for such initiatives to come to a halt, within reasonable limits.
The issue was also discussed during Davutoglu’s telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to diplomatic sources who said Washington was informed of the resolution’s potential to harm bilateral relations with the United States.
Sec. Clinton should have reminded and warned davutoglu not to interfere in the internal affairs of the United States. She should have reminded the turks that the only parties that are obstacles to peace for the past 500 years in the Middle East and the Caucasus have been the turks.
What he’s really expressing is his frustration that the Protocols have not, as he had hoped, derailed the efforts of Armenian Americans to seek a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide.
Denial of the facts of Armenian Genocide is not a new scenario from the land of Midnight Express.. April 24 is Turkey’s nightmare…
Turkey’s recent political tactics were not appreciated either by west or Russia..
There will be new order from main power players regards Caucasus and Turkey.
Turkey’s double standard policy is not acceptable, especially for Israel, where their security is more important than false friendship. “You are what your friends are”….
The normalization efforts have been hindered for almost 100 years. The normalization efforts were torpedoed when Turkey, without its parliment’s authorization, blockaded the borders. Why does it now need parliment’s authorization to open the borders. The protocols are dead and the threats are empty. We have all gone through this with Cyprus and the blockade imposed against it. It is a scam. Enough is enough. Armenia needs to have joint collaberations with Iran in mining for uranium. Armenia is also going to need uranium to run its nuclear power plants.
Turkey wishes to dangle the protocols as a talking point against HR 252, however, most Armenian-Americans are clearly opposed to the protocols, which only fuels the idea that the Foreign Affairs Committee should pass it in order to end these “normalized” relations.
If Turkey thinks that the committee passage can be used as an effective externality, then they need to reconsider the objective of Armenian-Americans.
A usual Turkish blackmail. When France recognized the Genocide, Turks threw a tantrum, then came to their senses, accepted the reality of failure of the blackmail and went on with normal relations with France. Same thing will happen now if the USA does the same. However US government is lacking in testicular fortitude department, unfortunately, and Turkish blackmail will result in usual outcome.
Davutoglu ,” We are exerting efforts for a comprehensive peace in the Caucasus.”
Yeah right. Living in peace with Turks is like Sheep and a Wolf living together. What a joke.
These Turks are having a helluva hard time owning-up to their criminal past and present..Haven’t they realized that Genocide is Turkey’s Nationa;l Industry? Check it out:
Greek genocide,Armenian genocide,Pontus genocide,Assyrian genocide. Dude these Turks are expert in genocide business. In order to have lasting peace in the region this ‘TURKISH CANCER’ must be cut clean out of the world body.
so you’re suggesting genocide in return? What kind of an idiot comment is that?
Let it “torpedo” the protocols. For ounce i am wishing what Davoudoghlou is wishing.
Turkey is guilty of Genocidal crimes against Armenians and the humanity. The history has been written and it is not changable. Put the criminal Turkey on trial.
As far as Ahmet Davutoglu in concerned, he can always go back to the land of his ancestors Mongolia.
The Genocide Bill will torpedo Turkey and someone should mention this to Ahmet Davutoglu.
Turkey hide, Turkey run, Turkey guilty of Genocide.
