MOSCOW (Itar-Tass)–The Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) is expected to discuss the ratification of a Russian-Armenian treaty next Friday–the leader of the People’s Power faction–Nikolai Ryzhkov–announced Friday.
The treaty specifies the status of Russia’s military bases in Armenia.
This bi-lateral military accord was signed by the Russian and Armenian presidents in March 1995. Ryzhkov held a press conference Friday to report on the results of State Duma deputies’ visit to Armenia earlier this week.
According to Ryzhkov–information about illegal arms deliveries to Armenia–disclosed by Chairman of the Duma Defense Committee Lev Rokhlin–provoked a "very severe reaction."
"It might have been prudent to analyze the situation and call to answer those responsible before making public this information," Ryzhkov said–adding that was the reason for passing today’s resolution on prevention of illegal arms deliveries.
Speaking about Russia’s policy in the region–Ryzhkov said the current leadership "lacks any policy strategy in the Transcaucasian region."
