TBILISI (Reuters)–Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze survived an assassination attempt on Monday–his press service reported.
"There was an assassination attempt on the president’s life," a spokesman confirmed–"There was an explosion. The president is alive–he is at his city residence. There are many wounded." No further details were provided.
The spokesman–Vakhtang Maskhulia–later said the explosion took place when Shevardnadze’s motorcade was heading toward his Krtsanisi residence in the Georgian capital.
He said one bodyguard had been killed and three others wounded. Several cars were still ablaze–he said.
