LONDON (Noyan-Tapan)–A group of ecologists have applied to the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with a request not to finance the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline–based on ecological and social consequences it will have throughout the region.
According to EBRD Head of Media relations Jeff Hiday–the bank received an official letter opposing the construction of the pipeline from a group of ecological and environmental organizations–including the British "Friends of Earth" and "Corner Base" as well as Turkey-based "Kurdish Human Rights Projects" and the "Greens Movement of Georgia."
Jeff Hiday added that the presented complaints can somehow affect the final decision of EBRD to finance a portion of the project–which is estimated at $3.6 billion.
"We are carefully investigating all the aspects of the project–and there is a possibility that EBRD will withdraw from financing the pipeline," Hiday concluded.
