NEWPORT, Wales (Vestnik Kavkaza)—NATO is obliged to fulfill the promises it has given to Azerbaijan, the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday at a NATO meeting in Wales. “The resolution of the Karabakh conflict within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan is of great importance, and this conflict should be resolved,” Erdogan said.
Turkish experts told Vestnik Kavkaza that peace in the South Caucasus is very important to the new leadership of Turkey.
An expert on war and terrorism, Khaldun Yalcin Kaya, said that Turkey intends to participate actively in the conflict, taking into account the fact that Azerbaijan is its strategic partner.
A senior lecturer at the Department of International Relations, University of Economics and Technology TOBB (Ankara), Togrul Ismail, said that the settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh “would contribute to the development of Turkey.”
Responding to Turkey’s vows to protect Azerbaijan, Armenia’s President Serzh Sarkisian challenged NATO on Thursday, saying either peace will prevail in Karabakh or the continued threats of war will mar security in the region.
Saying that the Armenian people have felt threats to security on their skins and know the value of regional stability, Sarkisian said that those were the two options as NATO is scheduled to adopt a document Friday “that will be related to the security of my people and peace in our region.”
“There are two options. Either [the NATO Summit] will adopt the language of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is the only specialized international structure dealing with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict — language that was proposed and supported by the Co-Chair countries that are represented here by France and the United States of America — or, upon the lobbying of another member state, it will pass again with an aim to save the face of our tyrant neighbor vis-a-vis his own people. Believe me the latter option will not lead to any positive results,” said Sarkisian.
“Either common sense and the desire for peace will have the upper hand, or the silent encouragement of xenophobia will deepen the war rhetoric and deadly provocations so easily brandished by Azerbaijan, which does not care about its soldiers’ lives and becomes encouraged with such statements,” added Sarkisian.
Bravo! For the president of Armenia
A fellow Armenian said will all this make a difference ?….I know it will not change much.
It may only pressure Turkey to consider her next move…Rough Tough language…and semi sincere expressions of Erdoghan will have negative impact on Turkey…..Armenians need to be ready for all eventualities.
Luckily Azerbaijan is not a democratic country, so that adds another obstacle for the West to fully support it. It’s evident that the West is playing a waiting game and using that country for its resources for the time being.
As far as Erdogan goes, he and his Azeri chum can complain and bicker all they want, but the main forces in NATO, namely, the US, France and the UK, have all said that there will be no war in the region and the only means for problem solving is through peaceful and diplomatic cooperation. Not only that but some countries like Greece and Germany, support, and cooperate with Armenia militarily. I think the West is aware that a unified Turkey-Azerbaijan without Armenia in the way would be a threat to their interests as well as it would be Russia’s and Iran’s. Armenia’s Foreign Ministry should do a better job of underscoring this in all three regions when it can, and should use this a bit to its advantage to find some leeway.
Good point
turkey gives our lands back, our gold and money-and we let them live-in a camp
the jerks that is-the others- we send them to camp desert
I think the barking rabid Turkish ErdoDog and the Azerbabooni draft-dodger Aliyev must be taught a lesson they will never forget. Their noses must be rubbed in dirt and the smirks wiped off their faces once and for all. These two racist idiots, and their illiterate and brainwashed peasant nations, will never change. I feel like talking to these people is a complete waste of time. They are not interested in the truth and justice. Their stand against the Armenians does not stem from the position of righteousness but emanates from their deep hatred of our people. The hatred that they feel is needed to use as shields to protect their ill-gotten wealth, territories/properties etc., they forcefully acquired from our people.
ErdoDog keeps saying he has promises to keep and vows to protect Azerbaijan and reminds the NATO member countries about their promises to Turkey and therefore to Azerbaijan. I thought about these things and realized what ErdoDog actually is trying to say is that Turkey, while itself is occupying Northern Cyprus since 1974, can not afford to remain neutral (has to play the double-standards) in regards to Armenian and Azerbaijani conflict and that’s because if he did so and stayed out and let the Armenians get a piece of justice from the Azerbaijanis then the Armenians will go after him next.
These two wolves in sheep’s clothing are playing games with us and they both need each other to try to suppress the legitimate demands of the Armenians. Turkey is using its NATO membership card and Azerbaijan is using its energy resources to coax, bribe, and blackmail to remind the NATO member countries whose sides they should be on. The sides that can fulfill their energy needs, look after their interests and give them open access to the troubled region of the Middle East and beyond OR be on the side of justice for the landlocked Armenia with very little to offer to NATO and while being in the sphere of Russian influence, an adversary of the NATO alliance needless to say.
This is the game these two Turkish and pseudo-Turkish devils are playing against us. They are using their geopolitical importance, as well as energy abundance for energy-hungry Europe, to deny justice to the Armenians. They are taking advantage of the current political situation in the region to buy out the corrupt NATO leaders at the expense of our people’s just but unfulfilled aspirations.
Այս երկու Թուրք եւ Ադրբեջանի հաչող շները արժանի չեն մարդ կոչւելու եւ յոյսով եմ մօտ ապագաում երկուսն էլ պիտ սատկեն.
With the NATO in the background the prospects do not seem going towaeds the interests of Armenia and Karabakh but with the Russia in background, a counterbalance to the conflict proved in Sochi who is already in odds with NATO on Ukraine and in a winning position, why should it let Artzakh, his ally, go to Azerbaijan a NATO ally, just for the sake of selling some military amunition to him?, that option is secure anyway for Russia just to keep alive the Status Que in Armen/Azeri conflict. So why Erdogan is barking for Azerbaijan, he anyway has Azeri Ceyran energy pipeline ending up in Turkey meditranean shore, the answere can be found in the Turkey’s general policy of barking in order to gain Moslem friends to fortify his position as a leader of the regional politics, like it did to Israel to gain Arab friends. Why? In order to impress EU for easy access into, for which it has been struggling since long time for it;s economical and yet more political stability. Therefore Turkey and it;s little brother Azerbayjan will always be in the list of the nemies of Russia, so Armenia and Artzakh see Russia as “The enemy of their enemy is their friend”. So Turkey’s barking is doomed. Amen. A.N.
Some truth here, but this means nothing as long as Armenia’s authorities did not stress the dangers of the Turkish-Azeri relationship in terms of Russian interests. Just as the Russians and their Armenian lapdogs (Avetis) do everything in their power to scare other Armenians into thinking there would be no Armenia without Russia, Armenians could have done the exact same thing and pressed that the Russians would be in a serious strategic disadvantage if the Armenians are weakened in any way (economic, military). This would have bought Armenia some independence, and we would have been able to have trade relations with Europe and with Russia.
Now we have lost a large chunk of our population, are becoming increasingly poor, and isolated and dependent on Russia. This is what you call idiot decision making by oligarchs who have more blood circulating in their melon-sized biceps than in their heads.
NATO politically do not care for Axerbaijan and Armenia, as long as oil shipment will be received on time in European and Israeli gas stations!
It is time that Erdogan makes the idea of giving up most of it’s land to Armenians, Kurds, Alevis, etc.. and live in a smaller Turkey which can be accepted into EU and have a future, the present Turkey with it’s almost 85 million population is a pain in the ass for EU.
Well, the Neo-Cons installed him just so they can implement the “Greater Middle East” project, which will lead to Turkey’s break up. Why do you think Erdogan is wimping out to Kurdish seperatists and shaking hands with Barzani? Btw, if Turkey joins the EU, the Turkish economy will collapse and die out. Why do you think Greece struggled with an Economic Crisis?
Greece struggled because of certain entities in the Greek government being dishonest about their country’s wealth, and spending much, much more money than they actually had all the while projecting an image of prosperity. The lie eventually caught up with them and now they’re paying for it. The EU is not responsible for the Greek financial collapse, that was strictly of Athens’s own doing.
Turkey is NATO. Belarus can not fight in turkey
NATO isn’t ‘obliged’. In fact, Turkey’s accession to NATO was illegitimate: It had (and still has, as we all know) serious issues with territorial integrity. As far as we are concerned, Turks are still to honor Woodrow Wilson’s Arbitral Award. It’s a CRIME to have a perpetrator ilike Turkey in that solid organization.
Note in the picture: he is saluting the Turkish extremists “Woolf” Salute… to whom I may ask?
Actually, Grey Wolves hate him because he is giving concessions to Kurdish seperatists and his ties with KRG Barzani. MHP does not like his concessionary mindset on many issues concerning national security, as well as his refusal to protect Turkmens in Syria and Iraq who are suffering under the ISIS onslaught.
