YEREVAN (Armenpress)–In a recent interview EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana said that peace in the Southern Caucasus can only be achieved through painful compromises between the leaders of the parties in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
"Effective regional cooperation would constitute a valuable contribution to confidence-building–and with this in mind–the EU is considering whether more of its assistance could be regional rather than bilateral in nature," Solana said.
According to Solana–the European Union’s overriding objective is to help build stability and mutual confidence in the region as well as with its neighboring states. "Therefore–we are constantly looking for ways to promote such development–be it through direct incentives or in dialogue with partners. Without going into detail–we regularly discuss these matters with both Armenia and Turkey," he said.
