YEREVAN (ARF Press Service)A delegation from the Party of European Socialists and European Forum for Democracy and Soldarity, in Armenian for a fact-finding mission, met with Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau member Vahan Hovannesian, ARF Supreme Council of Armenia chairman Armen Rustamian and ARF political director Giro Manoyan Wednesday. Heading the European delegation was Austrias Peter Scheider, the former chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe. The delegation also included European Parliament deputy chairman Miguel Angel Martinez of Spain, Europarliament Member Dan Sorin Mihalache of Romania, Netherlands Parliament Member Marty van Dam, as well as representatives of Socialist paries from Sweden, Great Britain and Slovakia. During the more than two-hour meeting, the ARF representatives reported on the domestic political developmen’s in Armenia and discussed regional issues. Relations between the two parties were also a topic of discussion. The European delegation will visit with several parliamentary and non-parliamentary parties in Armenia, non-governmental organizations and Armenia’s foreign minister. The Party of European Socialists brings together the Socialist, Social Democratic and Labour Parties of the European Union. There are 33 full member parties from the 27 EU member States and Norway. In addition, there are six associate and seven observer parties. The PES was founded in 1992 following the Treaty on European Union and the recognition of the importance of political parties at a European level. It succeeded the Confederation of Socialist Parties of the European Community, which had been set up in 1974. The European Forum for Democracy and Solidarity was founded in January 1993 by the social democratic parties and political foundations from EU countries. The European Forum is dedicated to support the transformation and democratization processes in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. By serving as a platform for co-operation between social democratic parties, organizations and personalities it aims to contribute to the development of (social-) democracy. Within the European Forum 12 social democratic foundations and 20 social democratic parties play an active role.
