YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The government program of solving refugee problems adopted in 1994 has not been implemented so far–Executive Director of the Fund against Violations of Law Larisa Alaverdian said at the first series of the "Support of Refugees" courses September 27. She pointed out that 360,000 refugees are currently residing in Armenia–and the recently adopted Law on Refugees is not in effect.
By the Fund’s efforts the afore-mentioned week-long courses were started in Yerevan September 27. The participants in the courses will discuss the international legislation on refugees and problems of refugees residing in Armenia. Participating in the courses will be representatives of the public organizations "Mission to Armenia,"Center of Civil Social Development,"Refugees’ Fund,"Fund of Maternity of Armenia," as well as officials from the Ministry of Defense–Ministry of Social Welfare and UNHCR Armenia Office.
Alaverdian also reported that the action is aimed at combining efforts of relevant organizations in holding joint discussions concerning the situation and demanding that the government adopt a program regarding refugees. Alaverdian expressed optimism that by the end of 2000 the government will have adopted a program and pursue coordinated refugee policy.
