YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Foreign Minister of Armenia Vartan Oskanian spoke last week in Strasbourg before the Council of Europe Ministers Council to present the inner situation of the Armenia and Karabakh conflict resolution process.
Referring to Armenia’s accession to the Council of Europe–Oskanian reconfirmed Armenia’s position on simultaneous membership with Azerbaijan–noting at the same time that problems related to membership of either Azerbaijan or Armenia’should not affect the accession terms of the other. Oskanian called on senior European officials to evaluate Armenia and Azerbaijan in accordance with the level of democracy in each country.
According to Armenian foreign ministry–Oskanian had a meeting with Schwimmer–the secretary general of the Council of Europe. Both men expressed hope that there would not be obstacles in the way of Armenia’s accession to the Council.
Oskanian also had a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Villayat Guliyev to once again refer to Karabakh conflict resolution. It was stated that direct dialogue between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan must continue with the aim of finding a mutually acceptable peace formula.
Minister Oskanian met with secretary general of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Haller on October 13 and addressed a conference on struggle against racial discrimination and intolerance. Minister Oskanian returned to Yerevan October 14.
