In an opinion piece featured in The American Interest, former US ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Kauzlarich, along with executive director of Freedom House David. J. Kramer, outline the severe human rights crisis taking place in Azerbaijan, saying that it’s “Time for Sanctions on Baku.”
“It’s time … for the United States to apply a law modeled on the 2012 Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law and Accountability Act to authorities in Baku. A number of Azerbaijani activists have called for such measures. Given the reported assets the Aliyev family and its circle hold overseas, freezing their assets and denying them access and travel to the West might just do the trick. The State Department should also issue a travel warning to American citizens alerting them of the surveillance, harassment, and possible detention they might face in Azerbaijan,” the article says.

It is time for the USA to act, While it is sad that we still divide the world into us and them, the USA and others should use its power, both overt and covert, to rid the world of this dictatorship and sanctions are a good start. It may alienate them at first and push this oil into the hands of the Russians or the Chinese but the people come first. A future with friendly neighbor for Armenia would change everything in the area.
