RUSE, Bulgaria–The city of Ruse on Thursday became the fourth major Bulgarian city to acknowledge the Armenian genocide.
Ruse, which has a population of 175,000, adopted the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide with a vote of 36 to 3 with 5 abstentions. The move by the Ruse City Council comes amid a period of increasing tolerance for Turkish denial in Europe and follows similar actions recognizing the genocide in the city councils of Varna, Plovdiv, and Burgas. The four cities have a collective population of over one million people.
Bulgaria is governed by a coalition between Socialists and an ethnic party representing the large Turkish community of the country.
The European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy Friday commended the citizens of Ruse, the members of their city council as well as the local Armenian community and the Armenian National Committee of Bulgaria.
A similar resolution adopted in February by the city of Burgas triggered the freeze of any commercial relations by the neighboring Turkish region of Edirne (Andrinople), and the European trans-boundary program PHARE.
The move reveals the danger Turkey’s State denial poses on the policies of the European Union.
