GLENDALE–The California Senate has approved a measure spearheaded by Sen. Adam Schiff (D) to allocate $463,785 for a documentary film on the Armenian Genocide entitled "The Witnesses."
The funding–which has yet to be approved during the state budget process–would be allocated to the Armenian Film Foundation as a part of a grant program in the California Arts Council.
The bill is currently in a budget conference committee of both houses of the state legislature.
The documentary is intended for distribution to educational institutions and public television.
The project began almost 15 years ago by the Armenian Film Foundation–which has accessed footage and interviewed Genocide survivors and witnesses.
The three-part film is slated for completion in the 2000 to coincide with the 85th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
