YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Sixteen best films shot by German cinematographers over the last two years will be shown during the Festival of German films to be held in Yerevan June 19-24. At the request of the Armenian side the film "Glorious Future" by Armenian film director Atom Egoyan will also be shown. A festival of Japanese films to be held in Yerevan at the "Moscow" cinema on June 18 and that of German films on June 19-24 at the Republican Cinema House will be the continuation of the recently held Festival of Greek films in which cinema-goers showed a great interest–Deputy Minister of Culture–Youth Affairs and Sport Vigen Chaldranian told a news conference Wednesday.
Cultural Attach of the German Embassy in Armenia Marion Ramakers–in turn–pointed out that the organization of the third festival of German films in Armenia’should be an example for other countries. According to her–a number of silent films are also expected to be demonstrated in Yerevan this September.
The Festival of German films is organized with the assistance of the German Embassy in Armenia–the Film Bureau of Northern Rhine-Westvalia–Inter Nationes–Association of Cinematologists and TV Journalists of Armenia–Ministry of Culture–Youth Affairs and Sport and the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia.
Pointing out that cinema is the only art that can present a nation as much as possible–Chaldranian reported that demonstrations of Armenian films are to be organized in France–Belgium and Brazil this September. According to him negotiations are being conducted on organizing the demonstrations of Ukrainian films in Armenia and Armenian films in Ukraine.
11. Felix Pirumian Appointed Presidential Advisor
YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian signed a decree June 17 appointing Felix Pirumian as his advisor. Pirumian will be in charge of earthquake zone construction affairs–the presidential press service said.
12. Two Armenian Hostages in Satisfactory Condition
YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–According to the previously drawn up plan–a group of independent mediators in finding and exchanging missing persons arrived in Azerbaijan on May 7–Executive Director of the "Fund against Violations of Law" Larisa Alaverdian told Noyan Tapan. The group visited two Armenian hostages kept in the Gobustan prison for POWs–Ruben Matossian,20 and Edgar Grigorian–21. The hostages’ physical condition is satisfactory; they are looking forward to the two states’ arrival at an agreement allowing the hostages return to their homes. The mediators failed to verify the information about other Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan; the Azerbaijani authorities did not allow the group to visit other confined locations besides the Gobustan prison
