SALONICA, GreeceThe Armenian National Committee of Greece held a press conference Wednesday, upon learning that the Greek Justice Ministry was filining charges against individuals who burned a Turkish flag during an April 24 demonstration at the Turkish Consulate. The ANC of Greece learned through local television news reports that the Turkish Embassy had appealed to the Greek Foreign Ministry to pursue criminal charges against the community and the individuals responsible for the alleged burning. ANC spokesperson Sebouh Kasparian told the press conference that the community was outraged and puzzled at the reaction, since Turkey was the country that had soaked its flag with the blood of Armenia’s and Pontians. He explained that it is the same blood-soaked flag, against which this protest occurred. The ANC spokesperson called the Greek authorities reaction unprecedented and radical, and contradictory to the countrys democratic values. The Foreign Ministry has asked its law enforcement agencies to provide photos and videos to identify those burning the Turkish flag.
