GLENDALE–More than 300 community members attended a commemorative gathering Monday evening at the Verdugo Hills Country Club to mark the 10th anniversary of the Armenian earthquake. The gathering was organized by the Gumri Compatriotic Union of Los Angeles.
Earlier that day–a delegation of the Gumri Union–headed by its president Yuri Vartanian–placed wreaths at the earthquake monument at the St. John the Baptist Armenian Apostolic Church in Hollywood. A memorial Mass was said and a moment of silence was observed in memory of the victims of the earthquake.
The evening’s Master of Ceremonies–famed actor Raffi Grigorian introduced Vartanian–who stated that Gumri had been forgotten and left on its own to heal its wounds. He added that the earthquake zone was not yet constructed.
Following a brief video presentation–an appeal directed to President Robert Kocharian –was read. The appeal stressed that the earthquake zone had been ignored and called on authorities to take steps to that end.
