BAKU (Armenpress)–Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who has repeatedly threatened to start a new war in the Caucasus to recapture Karabakh, said Thursday that a resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will bring “peace and development” in the troubled South Caucasus region.
“If we settle the conflict, as I hope we will, the development of the countries of the region will be faster,” Aliev said after the negotiations with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who was Baku on a short visit on Wednesday.
According to Aliyev, who has been raising the specter of war by threatening to invade Karabakh, said the resolution of the Karabakh conflict will bring about an “entirely new” situation in the region.
“Cooperation and stability will be established, there will be new economic and political initiatives, new communications will open, in short, the peace and development of the region will be ensured,” he said.
“We want peace and calm to exist in the region, so that countries can establish normal relations with each other,” Aliyev remarked. “For this purpose it is necessary that the Armenian political leadership display will and undertake wise steps,” I. Aliev stated.
