Homenetmen’s 1st Annual “Family Campout” took place on the weekend of September 9 to 11. The event, organized by the Camp Tecuya committee, was held at Homenetmen Camp Tecuya in Frazier Park, Calif. More than 150 Homenetmen members and their families were in attendance for this fun filled weekend. The weekend consisted of activities for participants of all ages, including: mountain biking, archery, boomerang toss, arts & crafts, Frisbee, golf, talent show, and an obstacle course. Camp Tecuya’s trading post was also in full effect– stocked with “Tecuya” merchandise, snacks and other items available for our campers. As the sun went down below the clouds, the campers prepared for the evening’s long awaited campfire—“Kharooyg”—led by Arick Gevorkian. Arick played his accordion as the children and their families sang and danced into the night. The night was filled with so much energy and excitement that it brought back great memories for our former ari and arenoushes.
To add a little more excitement to an already exciting weekend, the campers experienced what it felt like to be caught in a thunderstorm in the great outdoors. Some campers found this experience to be unique, but it didn’t stop them from enjoying the activities that were planned for the day. While God’s creation was doing its thing outdoors, the campers were huddled in the lodge, drinking tea, doing arts and crafts, playing board games, or watching a movie waiting for the storm to pass. Once the sun came out again on Saturday, it stayed with the campers for the remainder of the weekend, making it the perfect camping weather.
Saturday afternoon, several Regional Executive members came up to camp, to spend the day with everyone. H-TV (Homenetmen TV) was also there interviewing campers and members of the Camp Tecuya committee. Emil Dergevorkian, Co-Chairman of the Homenetmen Camp Tecuya Committee commented, “This campout was such a great opportunity for families and friends to come out, see and experience Camp Tecuya. Many of the children and parents made new friends, and created memories that will last a lifetime.” Nely Ourkhan, one of the parents camping with her family said, “Thank you on behalf of my family for this memorable experience. We are still talking about all the fun we had and all the wonderful people we met. We look forward to the next campout!”
This weekend allowed the campers to reunite with old friends and fellow scouts, spend quality time with their own families and enjoy the great outdoors. The campers left the campout weekend with huge smiles, and several mentioned they couldn’t wait till the next one.
Dr. Phaedra Deukmedjian, a former girl scout troop leader, summed it up by saying, “What a weekend! Can’t wait until next year.”
Thanks to all those that attended and made the 1st Annual Homenetmen Family Campout a HUGE SUCCESS!
