YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"We have to exert strenuous efforts for the world community to recognize the injustice committed against our people–and we must recover what is ours," Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia member and newly appointed presidential advisor Vahan Hovanessian told Noyan Tapan.
Stressing the need for the reinstatement of the historical rights of the Armenian people–Hovanessian said that the genocide issue must be presented to the world–and the state’s task is not to put forward territorial claims.
However–the state should assist in the creation of a social atmosphere promoting the realization of national aspirations," said Hovanessian. "The state serves the people as an instrument for normal life and ensures the welfare of the nation. And if the welfare of our people has been destroyed–wrecked–our historical right taken away from us–who must advocate the restoration of that right other than the state," he said.
Hovanessian positively assessed the position Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian voiced through the press–according to which today’s foreign agenda should include the issue of recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. At the same time–he said that extremism is unacceptable in acquiring the historical right of the Armenian people. "All those who are accusing the ARF of reactionary and extremist approaches are sadly mistaken," said Hovanessian.
Asked what he would advise the government to do to earn international recognition of the Genocide–the ARF representative said–"We will teach them–we have experience." Hovanessian added that "the Armenian National Committee can serve as a good model for work in certain spheres."
