ATHENS (Azad Or)–Armenian presidential adviser and member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Executive Council of Armenia–Vahan Hovanessian–met with Greek Parliament chairman Apostolos Kaklaman’s–as he continued his visit to Greece Tuesday.
Hovanessian is in Athens representing the Armenian government and aims to meet with various segmen’s of the Armenian community–as well as conduct political meetings with Greek officials.
During his meeting with Kaklaman’s–which was also attended by representatives of the Armenian National Committee of Greece–Greek-Armenian relations were discussed and furthering ties between the two countries were addressed.
Hovanessian presented the government’s position on the settlement of the Karabakh conflict–stressing Armenia’s instance on a peaceful resolution to the question.
He also discussed the internal socio-political situation in Armenia–stressing the important role of the Diaspora–specifically the Greek-Armenian community–in reforming the domestic situation of Armenia.
Hovanessian stated that the ARF believed the issues of the Pontheus Greek massacres should become an agenda topic for the international community.
He added that the ARF would encourage a visit by Kaklaman’s to Armenia–adding that such a visit would greatly enhance already close Greek-Armenia relations.
Kaklaman’s thanked Hovanessian for his assessment and conveyed his kind wishes to President Robert Kocharian.
On Monday–Hovanessian met with the chairman of the Caucasus commission of the European parliament–Constantin Alavanos.
Alavanos–who is the parliamentary bloc chairman of the Sinaspismo party–was briefed on Armenia’s foreign policy obstacles and approaches to the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Hovanessian stated that the European Parliament should take a more active role in the Karabakh question–in order to urge Azerbaijan to take part in peace talks without preconditions.
Alavanos pledged that he would spearhead efforts to pressure Azerbaijan to lift the 10-year-old blockade of Armenia.
Hovanessian also discussed issues of importance to Armenia and Armenia’s with the chairman of the "Political Spring" party of Greece.
He later met with the ARF Central Committee of Greece.
Hovanessian was scheduled to meet with members of the Greek-Armenian community Tuesday evening.
