YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– There are still many omissions and shortcomings in the draft law "On Protector of Human Rights" which is currently being elaborated in the Presidential Committee on Human Rights. The Committee arrived at this conclusion on Thursday and found it advisable that the draft should be submitted for the consideration of the government and parliamentary experts only after the above-mentioned omissions are rectified.
It was observed that the law "On Protector of Human Rights" is expected to be adopted in October-November–before amending the Constitution.. Later–after these amendmen’s are made in the Constitution–amendmen’s in the law can also be made if necessary. The meeting also discussed 14 appeals about the torture and murder of soldiers in the army. A member of the Committee–chairwoman of the "Soldier’s Mother" organization–Greta Mirzoyan said these are only a few facts of violations of law that take place in the army. The Committee decided to invite the Military Procurator of Armenia to its next meeting on September 10 and hear his report on the statistical data of murders and suicides in the army. Representatives of the Defense Ministry will also be invited to the meeting.
