YEREVAN (ArmeniaNow)–This summer–Armenian TV station Shant TV will air a new–Armenian version of the popular reality show "American Idol." The show–which will be called "Hye Superstar," will be based on the original–British version of the show.
"This project is something very new for Armenia," says Erik Antaranyan–producer of "Hye Superstar."
The contest is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 28 and casting will begin this weekend in Gyumri. There will also be casting calls in Vanadzor–Stepanakert–and Yerevan. Contestants should not have had any professional experience.
The initial 80 participants will be shortened to 30–and then to 11. The 11 participants will have to perform a pop song in 10 concerts and in each concert the audience will vote off one contestant. In summer–a winner will be chosen–whose musical career will be launched with a recording contract.
One worry Antaranyan has is the potential of having a winner selected by bribery or influence rather than talent.
"If the British see that we selected someone who obviously has no talent–we could lose the chance to acquire the license in the future." says Antaranyan.
Antaranyan assures–however–that the issue has already been addressed.
The organizers are convinced that the show will have a great success in Armenia and hope that the project will attract viewers and participants from the diaspora as well.
