YEREVAN (Armenpress)-Experts from half a dozen countries were in Yerevan Thursday for the opening session of an international conference dedicated to discussing the affects of geopolitical on the South Caucasus and its economic development.
Political Scientists, journalists and a host of experts from Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey and the US were in Yerevan to participate in the conference and discuss the achievemen’s of their respective countries during 2007. The conference, entitled "Caucasus 2007," will also discuss the existing challenges facing the South Caucasus countries.
According to Caucasian Media Institute Director Alexander Iskandarian, Every global event that takes place in the world has a subsequent political and economic impact on the South Caucasus region.
The South Caucasus is a difficult and special region where the interests of the great powers collide, he explained, adding that the South Caucasus also suffers from a number historically unsolved issues that continue to reverberate to this day.
The policies of the western powers and Russia in the North and South Caucasus during 2007 will be a special topic of discussion during the conference.
Also on the agenda is a discussion over issues related to the unrecognized republics of the South Caucasus and their impact on the security of the region.
The head of the International Relations Department of the Ankara Economy and Technology University Mustafa Aydin is set to present on Friday a report on "Turkey’s Policy in the South Caucasus in 2007."
The conference is organized by the Caucasian Media Institute and the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency in collaboration with the Eurasian Cooperation Foundation and the Henrich Byol Foundation. It will last until May 23.
