TEHRAN (Armenpress)–A senior representative of the Iranian foreign ministry has said that Iran has every necessary means to protect its section of the Caspian Sea.
Hamid Reza Asefi–a high-ranking official of the ministry said the Caspian Sea should be a common sea–but not an "occasion for competition."
"We are against any increase of the tension," he said in reference to a latest series of disagreemen’s over the Caspian Sea which have emerged between the two neighbor countries after an Iranian war ship forced an Azeri exploration boat out of the disputed waters.
Iran considers illegal any unilateral activity for exploration of Caspian oil fields unless a new agreement regarding the Caspian sea is approved by all the five seaside states of Russia–Turkmen’stan–Kazakhstan–Azerbaijan and Iran. Iran is reportedly trying to convince the other bordering states to abide by 1921 and 1940 agreemen’s signed between Iran and the former USSR
