TEHRAN (Noyan Tapan)–The government of the Islamic Republic recalled its ambassador to Azerbaijan Saturday–following the arrest of the Iranian Labor Society chairman in Baku.
While the reasons for the arrest have not been publicized–the government of Iran insisted that the arrest was baseless.
Relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have been tense–because of Azerbaijan’s close ties to Israel and issues surrounding the Caspian Sea oil reserves.
Radio Liberty assessed that the arrest could be the result of the tension between the two countries–or a means by Azerbaijan to further exacerbate relations.
